Nehra should be in the eleven: Dravid

Former India captain Rahul Dravid feels paceman Ashish Nehra should be a part of the team in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2011 if he is fit as he has got the experience of bowling at the death.

"I would have definitely played Ashish Nehra if he was fit as he has got the experience of playing in the World Cup and also has the ability. He has got a good experience of bowling at the death overs," said Dravid.

The experienced left-arm pacer from Delhi, who is an important wicket-taking bowler with genuine swing-bowling capabilities, was not included in the playing XI because of fitness issues.

Dravid, however, said it is still early part of the tournament and there is enough time for the team to get into the rhythm.

"This is just the early part of the tournament and there is no need to get too concerned. In fact, the part-timers are doing well in these sub-continental conditions. The others can also do very well on these tracks and also have a scope to improve," said Dravid after inaugurating the Castrol Cricket Performance Centre in the capital city.

The Test batsman however added that India would be benefited greatly if they figure out their main bowlers before the knockout stage.

"India have enough time to get into the rhythm and if at this league stage, they can decide on their top four bowlers then it would be good for them during the knockout stage," said Dravid.

Nonetheless, the 38-year-old admitted that it was not possible for a team to go into a match with a particular mindset all the time.

"Zaheer will obviously be a part of India's final eleven. But whether to play with a three seamers or go for two spinners would depend on the conditions. There is no set mindset one can go with," Dravid said.

"If you are playing in Delhi where the track may spin, you may go with two spinners but if you are playing in Mohali or Ahmedabad then you must play with three pacers. So it depends," said the Bangalorean, adding India's decision to play with seven batsmen is right in these conditions.

When asked about the controversial Decision Review System (DRS), which has come under a lot of criticism as well as praise from different quarters, Dravid said mistakes are a part and parcel of every technology.

"I have nothing much to say about the DRS other than the fact that there are going to be mistakes in anything that you do. Just got to learn from them, keep improving on them and keep getting better. Try and improve technology as much as possible."

Stating that he was in favour of the DRS, he said, "There have been errors but sometimes there are good decisions also. I am definitely in favour of trying to improve technology and trying to get it better. I am personally in favour of trying to improve technology."

"And if you want to remove technology and only want to have on-field umpires then you got to accept the mistakes and don't worry about them."

Stressing on the importance of the associate nations, who are a part of the sporting extravaganza but yet to make a mark, Dravid said if one wants cricket to grow then minnows of the game must be encouraged.

"ICC can make the World Cup a 10-team affair in future but they should give more opportunities to the teams to qualify in the top 10. So, may be a pre-qualifying tournament and then the World Cup would be a good idea.

"I think the associate nations are putting in a lot of efforts and they have worked very hard to have come to this level. So, I think we need to be encouraging them. It is important to recognise the effort they are putting in. If we want cricket to grow, they must be encouraged," said Dravid.

Dhoni wants easy ride against Dutch

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni wants to have an easy game against the Netherlands on Wednesday after surviving some anxious moments at the World Cup. The Indians cantered to an 87-run victory against Bangladesh followed by a high-scoring tie with England and a tense five-wicket victory over upstarts Ireland.

"It has been a good start for us so far," Dhoni told reporters Tuesday ahead of the clash against the Dutch at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium. "We saw a tight game, a close game and a good one. We are now looking forward to an easy game against the Netherlands. "We want to make the most of this game and especially in the departments where we want to see an improvement. We should not really be thinking about the result but the process, what are the things we want to get out of it." Dhoni accepted that the bowling had not been up to the mark but backed his under-fire attack to come good as the tournament progressed.

"We would like to improve a bit in our bowling especially when a batsman sets in, how to put pressure on that particular batsman and push him into playing a big shot and get him out. "I don't mind who is taking the wickets as long as the team is winning. To target a particular bowler is difficult. Bowlers are also under pressure as there has been a lot of talk about it. "But they are showing signs of improvement and I am hopeful they will peak at the right time." Dhoni said all-rounder Yuvraj Singh's form with the ball was a bonus for the side as that afforded the luxury to play an extra batsman. "I am a big fan of Yuvraj. He bats at number four or five.

He can play aggressively or be defensive if the situations so demands. "He is a big asset to the team. He also has to fill in the job of the fifth bowler which he has done brilliantly till now." The burly left-hander excelled as a part-time spinner, taking 5-31 against Ireland before making an unbeaten 50 under pressure to become the first player to achieve the double feat in the World Cup. Dhoni replied cheekily when asked about the controversial umpire decision review system. "Many times we have just taken the DRS for the heck of it before the 50 overs run out to see what happens. We don't mind using them instead of taking it back unused to the dressing room."

Bangladesh PM slams World Cup bus attack

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has criticised Bangladeshi fans for stoning the West Indies team bus after the home side was humiliated in the World Cup. The attack on the West Indies bus was "undesirable" and such behaviour could affect Bangladesh's chances of hosting further major events, Hasina told a political rally late Monday.

The Prime Minister urged fans to be patient after any home defeat, saying it was "not acceptable that you will garland the players if they win and pelt them with stones if they lose," she said. Bangladesh were bowled out for just 58 in the match against the West Indies on Friday, their lowest one-day total, before losing by nine wickets. The defeat severely dented the home side's hopes of making the quarter-finals. Bangladesh is co-hosting the 10th edition of the World Cup along with India and Sri Lanka. It earned praise for putting on a colourful opening ceremony, but the attack on the West Indies bus tarnished their image.

International Cricket Council chief executive Haroon Lorgat condemned the attack but said there were no immediate plans to move games. The bus came under attack as it was heading back to the West Indies' team hotel after the match, in what police said was a case of mistaken identity, with fans thinking it was the home team's vehicle. Lorgat said the ICC had no immediate plans to move matches from Bangladesh, with England and South Africa still to play group fixtures in the country against the Tigers.

He insisted the attack was a minor incident, with just a few pebbles hurled at the vehicle. But West Indies coach Ottis Gibson said the incident was a serious breach of security which caused the West Indies players to take cover on the floor of the bus. He blasted International Cricket Council boss Haroon Lorgat as "ridiculous" on Sunday for attempting to play down the stoning controversy. Fans also attacked Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan's house. Bangladesh immediately ramped up security at venues and in streets leading to the main stadiums. Police and the elite Rapid Action Battalion officers have also arrested 38 people in connection with the stoning incident. Police said the stones were thrown from distance and that fans thought it was the Bangladeshi team bus they were attacking. Two windows were smashed on the bus but there were no injuries.

'Big steps needed for Aus cricket revival'

Melbourne: Legendary Australian spinner Shane Warne has come up with a 10-point action plan to revive the state of cricket Down Under and said that tough decisions need to be made for the team to regain the number status in ICC Test rankings.
Warne said "it's time to draw a line in the sand with Australian cricket" as was done in the mid-1980s, if the team wants to be No. 1 again.

"Big decisions need to be made from the top down by Cricket Australia, selectors, the coach and the captain. Tough decisions on what is most important for Australian cricket, who is accountable for the selections in the past two years that have left us at this point, do we have the right leadership and who are the experienced players or fresh faces to take us into the future," Warne wrote in his column for the Herald Sun.
Ranked fourth behind India, South Africa and England, Australia lost the Ashes at home for the first time since 1987, and are currently on the verge of suffering another humiliating defeat in the ongoing Sydney Test.
"There is no disgrace in being beaten by a better team, but we must learn from them. We are no longer number one. The sooner we realise that and act on it, the quicker we can progress from fourth in the ICC rankings. There is no quick fix. It is going to take time, patience, support and encouragement," the yesteryear great wrote.
Warne's recommendations included getting international players to play more domestic cricket so as to strengthen their base, no more resting of players, do away with the seven-match ODI series against the same team, players getting to know their team-mates better, having fewer support staff, getting bowlers to start thinking about wickets, getting batsmen to work against bowlers and not bowling machines.
Warne also added that there needs to be an environment that is competitive and team orientated.
"I am passionate about Australian sport, in particular cricket as I love the game, and I want to see Australia back at No. 1. I was lucky to be given an opportunity to play for Australia in an era that was very successful. I learnt a lot about the game and it was very enjoyable.
"I am not sure how much fun the current team is having. Is their attitude and thinking that we are all in this together - let's help and support each other no matter what - or are they just thinking about their own positions? Australia have been the benchmark for a long time in all facets in the Test arena and that's something to be proud of."

Trans-Tasman rivals to meet in emotional clash

Allan Border has warned Australia to beware the threat of a New Zealand side riding a wave of emotion when the trans-Tasman rivals meet in a World Cup clash on Friday, overshadowed by the devastating Christchurch earthquake.

New Zealand's 15-man squad Tuesday desperately scrambled for news of loved ones caught up in the 6.3 magnitude quake which has left at least 98 dead, with the team admitting to being left shocked and numbed.

Former Australia captain Border, a World Cup winner in 1987, said the tragedy would give the Black Caps additional motivation.

"They're a side that tend to lift against Australia and given the recent events in Christchurch, they've got the added incentive to do well," Border told foxsports.com.au.

"Not that that should make that much difference, but you've got that incentive in the back of your mind to lift for the sake of your countrymen. They're a dangerous opponent, there's no doubt about that."

The Black Caps have seen physio Dayle Shackel return home for a week to leave then relying on Australian support staff here Friday.

New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori said a win for his side over Australia could lift national spirits.

"The greatest thing we can do for a lot of people is to win the game against Australia. I think that will bring a bit of light relief to some people going through tough times," he said.

The fixture has been given an added edge by being designated this year's Chappell-Hadlee Trophy match as it is the only chance Australia and New Zealand have to play each other in 2010/11.

The trophy, named for the contributions of Australia's Chappell family and New Zealand's Hadlee clan to their respective national teams, is currently held by Australia after a 3-2 series win last year in New Zealand.

Australia captain Ricky Ponting goes into the match having been reprimanded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after smashing a television set in a fit of fury after being run out during the champions' 91-run tournament opening win over Zimbabwe in Ahmedabad on Monday.

Australia, bidding for an unprecedented fourth successive title and fifth in all, looked awkward against Zimbabwe left-arm spinner Ray Price in an otherwise convincing victory that stretched their unbeaten run in World Cup matches to 24 straight games dating back to 1999.

"We know that spin factor will be a big one in this tournament. We know these conditions and know how to play in India or Sri Lanka," Ponting said.

But Australia are without Michael Hussey, one of their best batsmen against spin, after doubts over his fitness following a hamstring injury saw the left-hander left at home.

With New Zealand boasting two fine slow bowlers in Vettori and Nathan McCullum, he would have been a valuable asset against the Black Caps.

"Hopefully it won't come back and hurt us at all," Ponting said of Hussey's controversial omission.

"We've got what we've got now. We understand that Mike was disappointed not to be in this squad in the first place.... The medicos and our selectors felt he wasn't fit enough to come away on the tour."

For New Zealand, who thrashed Kenya in their opener, the match promises to be a stern test of their World Cup ambitions but Vettori is confident his inconsistent side can raise their game.

"If we are going to do well over here, we are going to have to beat the likes of Australia," said Vettori, who backed the Black Caps top order, which includes powerful hitters such as Brendon McCullum and Jesse Ryder, to propel New Zealand to what would be a first World Cup crown.

"I really believe our top four, top five can win this tournament for us and I think they will find Australia's pace attack to their liking."

India seek to break hosts' curse | Cricket News | Cricbuzz.com

India are well used to carrying the hopes of millions of cricket fans but now they will also try to overturn the weight of history by becoming the first main host nation to win the World Cup.

Home advantage is supposed to count for something in many sports but not so when it comes to winning the World Cup where individual brilliance or mathematical error have left those staging the party having to watch someone else walk away with the best present.

England hosted the first three World Cups, starting with the inaugural edition in 1975 and their best-effort saw them finish runners-up to a star-studded West Indies side in 1979.

The pioneers of one-day cricket, England reached the semi-finals in 1975 only to come up against inspired Australia all-rounder Gary Gilmour.

Left-arm paceman Gilmour made the most of a helpful Headingley pitch by taking six wickets for 14 runs as England collapsed to 93 all out and so became the first bowler to take six wickets in a one-day international.

Australia slumped in turn to 39 for six only for Gilmour to defy them with the bat in a match-clinching 28 not out.

Four years later England went one better but this time were undone by the West Indies.

India, Bangladesh set for rousing cricket opener | Cricket News | Cricbuzz.com

India will look to settle an old score against an increasingly confident Bangladesh when the co-hosts meet in an intriguing opening match of the World Cup on Saturday.

On paper, the day-night clash at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium in Dhaka may look like a no-contest with tournament favourites India having won 20 of their 22 one-day matches against the Tigers.

But the two defeats at Bangladesh's hands will rankle Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men when they take the field in front of some 25,000 partisan fans baying for India's blood.

A 15-run defeat in December 2004 in Dhaka was followed by a stunning five-wicket loss during the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean, which knocked India out in the first round.

Indian vice-captain Virender Sehwag, never one to mince words, told reporters ahead of the tournament that his team was charged up for what is widely seen as a grudge match.

"We have not forgotten that World Cup loss," the aggressive opener said. "We can't wait to play them again, and I am confident we will do better this time."

Bangladesh, who also defeated mighty South Africa in the second round of the last World Cup, could not have asked for a better setting to challenge the Indians.

Captains say World Cup wide open | Cricket News | Cricbuzz.com

Graeme Smith of South Africa and India's Mahendra Singh Dhoni joined a chorus of World Cup skippers predicting a closely contested tournament that will thrill players and fans alike.

At a rare assembly of all 14 captains for a photo-shoot and media conference in Dhaka on Thursday ahead of cricket's showpiece event, the general refrain was that it was impossible to choose a winner.

"I believe every team taking part has a chance to win, it is all very open," Smith said at the function that took place a few hours before the opening ceremony at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.

Added Dhoni: "All teams are in good touch. The gap between matches will help players recover from niggles which are bound to happen. It means every team will be in good shape for their matches.

"A side that plays consistently well over the next six weeks will do well."

Ricky Ponting, whose Australia won the last three World Cups, was the first off the blocks in making his opening remarks before the floor was thrown open to the media.

"On behalf of the 13 other captains, I welcome the cricket fraternity to the World Cup," said Ponting. "It is the pinnacle of our sport and we will make sure it is a spectacle to remember."

Dhoni, speaking on behalf of the three host nations -- India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka -- said it was fitting the tournament was being held in South Asia where cricket was a major sport.

Pawar starts his speech in Bengali | Cricket News | Cricbuzz.com

The president of the International Cricket Council Sharad Pawar today surprised everyone as he delivered the introductory lines of his speech at the inauguration ceremony of the World Cup in Bengali.

There was more surprise as Pawar addressed the Bangla crowd saying, "Pradhan Mantrir haath dhore progotir pothe egiye cholechen apnara (The Bangladesh Prime Minister is guiding you (Bangaldeshi public) towards the road to progress)."

Pawar praised the local organisers for arranging the event on such a grand scale.

"This will be a World Cup which everyone will remember," Pawar said.

"I have been associated with two World Cup opening ceremonies but this was organised on a grand scale."
